Raneh Falls

Raneh Falls is an awesome sight formed by Ken River flowing through & falling on granite rocks. Ken ( ancient name Karnavati ) falls in multiple places in to thirty meter deep & five km long canyon. This canyon is made up of crystalline granite rocks of different hues - pink, reddish, greenish & greyish. The rocks are said to be formed of volcanic activity long long ago - guide said five lac years back!

We had driven our car from Delhi & were in Khajuraho. The hotel staff recommended a visit to Raneh as driving was not a problem to us. Had never heard of River Ken or Raneh but decided to give it a try. The 22 km drive to Raneh was bumpy on a narrow rural road. Nevertheless the sight of water falls was worth it. Due to coloured rocks flanking the river in deep gorge this place is unique in India. Charming place for nature lovers.

Raneh is in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh 22 km from Khajuraho & 44 km from Panna. Public transport is available but erratic so have your own vehicle or hire one. Close to Raneh Falls is Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary where you can watch Ghariyals - smaller fish-eating crocodiles with long snouts native to India. This Ghariyal Santuary opens from Oct to Apr / May. There is a small photo museum about local birds & rocks here. A restaurant is also there. Boating is available. If time permits you can visit Panna National Park as well which is a tiger reserve. It is 20 km from Raneh but then jungle safari requires time min half a day. Besides per person entry charges of Rs. 20, there is guide fee & hefty vehicle fee as well.
Here are some photos & two videos:
