Long drive to Delhi - 42 : Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

Chittorgarh is located 112 Kms from Ajmer & approx 700 kms from Delhi. It is almost midway on Delhi - Bombay highway on NH 8. Golden Quadrilateral road network NH-76 & NH-79 intersect near Chittorgarh. Weather throughout the year is hot & rains are scanty. Best season to visit is Nov – Feb. Names of eminent people in history are associated with Chittorgarh: Rani Padmini, Meera Bai, Maharana Pratap, Rana Kumbha, Rana Hammir Singh & many others.

Meera Bai Temple

Folk lore mentions that Bhim started building the fort during Mahabharat. He was a disciple of sage here. Once out of impatience & anger he hit the ground hard & water sprang up to form a reservoir which is named Bhim-Lat.

The fort town is believed to have been constructed during 7th century AD & perhaps the name of fort is derived from Mauryan ruler Chitrangda Mori. It was capital of Mewar state established by Bappa Rawal for over eight hundred years. The fort was gifted to him in dowry!

Entry into the fort is through one mile long steep serpentine road through seven gates each having watch tower & iron spiked huge doors - Ram Pol (main gate), Laxman Pol, Jorla Pol, Ganesh Pol, Hanuman Pol, Bhairon Pol & Paidal Pol. Fort had 84 water bodies of which only 20 are functional now. Inside the forts there are 300 temples. The peripheral wall is said to be second longest to China Wall!

Victory Tower is 122 ft high & was built by Maharana Kumbha in 1440 to commemorate victory over Muslim rulers of Malwa & Gujrat. The tower stands on a 10 ft high base

In 1303 Alla-u-ddin Khilji, Sutan of Dilli hearing about exceptional beauty of Rani Pamavati attacked the fort to capture her. Rana Rattan Singh & the men folk of the fort took to arms & fought to death. Rani Padmini along with all the ladies in fort committed jauhar. It was recaptured by Hamir Singh in 1326 & it rose again.
In 1535 Bahdur Shah, Sultan of Gujrat besieged the court again & Rana Bikramjit Singh & entire men folk of fort donned saffron robes, took to arms to fight to death. Women folk led by Rani Karnavati committed jauhar.
In 1568 Akbar Udai Singh again captured the fort & mass jauhar was performed for the third time. Maharana Udai Singh II fled to Udaipur to re-establish his rule & founded Udaipur. Thus the stones of the fort are memorial to bravery, nationalism, courage & sacrifice of kings, soldiers, women & even children.

Long drive to Delhi : 41 - Towards Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

From Baroda we started towards Chittorgarh, Rajasthan bypassing Udaipur which we had already visited earlier. Roads in Gujrat & Rajasthan are good & most of the main highways have six lanes. Traffic is also thin but has lot of heavy vehicles. Truckers have their own ideas on road discipline & need to be left alone. Our Alto 800 merrily cruised along with a/c on & we had no problems. Though with heavier vehicle we could have covered the distance faster. Road side dhabas were fewer. We kept lot of snacks, water bottles & fruits for the journey.

We passed through Dungarpur district which looked pretty green after monsoon showers. Hot & bright sun made interesting combo with green hills. Some snaps taken while moving towards Chittorgarh are here:

Prior to this visit, never had heard of Dungarpur

Long drive to Delhi : 40 - Baroda City

From Shirdi we continued our journey in Alto 800 towards Surat via Dang. After overnight stay in Surat we proceeded to Vadodara and we found it to be a beautiful historical city.

Baroda or Vadodara is located on the banks of river Vishwamitri about 130 km from Gandhi Nagar, capital of Gujrat. The city has had various names as Vadpatraka (leaves of banyan tree) or Vadodara. English travellers called it Brodera. In 1974 it was officially named as Vadodara. Well connected with rest of the country, it is third largest city of Gujrat.

Baroda state or province or area had been under Gupta dynasty, Chalukya dynasty & Solanki dynasty. It came under Sultans in 1297 who were later overthrown by Mughals. In 1721 it came under the rule of Gaekwads of Maratha Confederacy & later under Gaekwad dynasty as an independent state. It continued under Gaekwads till 1949 when it was merged in to Indian Union.

Rule of Maharaja of Baroda state Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III (1863 - 1939 ) is considered to be golden period. During his reign many institutions & buildings including Laxmi Vilas Palace came up. Some photos of Baroda City:

In the middle of Baroda is Sur Sagar Lake, formerly known as Chandan Talao. 120 ft tall statue of Shiva - Sarveshvar Mahadev - was installed in 2002. The pond was polluted with rubbish. Clean India campaign is yet to reach there.

Diwani Court

Lehripura Darwaja or Western Gate was constructed in 1558

Mandvi Gate or North Gate was built by Sultan Muzaffar (1511 - 1526) presumbly for collection of toll. It was renovated in 1736 by Damajirao II & in 1856 by Ganpatrao Gaekwad

Kirti Stambh was built in 1935 to commemorate 60 years of rule of Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The lion atop the pillar is said to be old, facing east with back towards palace. This marked decision of the King to move into Vanprastha

Long drive to Delhi - 38: Vadodara - i of ii

Laxmi Vilas Palace. The Palace is said to be largest private dwelling unit till date

The Palace was built in Indo-Saracenic style in 1890. There are shades of Rajasthani, Jain, Mughal & Gujrati styles as well. Entire complex is spread over 700 acres including Moti Baug Palace & Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum

It was built in 1890 during the rule of Sayajirao Gaekwad III

Major Charles Mant was the architect of the palace. During construction, he apprehended that huge dome atop 300 feet high tower may collapse & he committed suicide. Robert Fellow Chisolm later completed the building. The cost incurred was GBP 180,000/-

Audio feed is available on the points of interest in the Palace

“It is not only the language of priesthood and a language in which there are many Hindu and many Buddhist texts, it is also a vehicle for many other radical thoughts of comprehensive doubts about the supernatural… a medium in which questioning of class, caste and legitimacy of power was expressed with profound eloquence by Sudraka in his profound play Mrichchhakatika,"

www.forgottenbooks.com/...pdf/The_Little_Clay_Cart_Mrcchakatika_an_..
